Education and didactics

Join the Space Exploration Laboratory to explore two pillars: (1) regolith handling with the Discrete Element Method (DEM), and (2) space-structure analysis with the Finite Element Method (FEM). Learn to calibrate DEM particles, model excavation, conveying and sieving in lunar/Martian gravity, and design hardware that avoids clogging and wear. In FEM, simulate lightweight trusses and panels under launch loads, thermal cycling and vacuum; verify by modal and vibration tests. We supervise BSc/MSc theses and student teams, offer EDEM and Abaqus/NX/… workflows, and co-create publications and demonstrators with industry and space-agency partners.

  • numerical vibration analysis of a small spacecraft payload
  • preliminary design and calculations of a component/device for operation in the space environment
  • vibration testing of a selected object using a modal shaker

REGOLITH HANDLING

Exemplary topics:

  • simulation of lunar regolith excavation using the RASSOR excavator
  • studies and simulations of lunar regolith interacting with a working machine/rover
  • investigation of the extraterrestrial minerals (e.g. regolith) – simulations and testing
